You are in for a treat! This week's podcast was produced on video! Our goal is to generate enough support to create videos on a regular basis. Click on over and check it out. THEN let us know what you think. https://www.stempunx.com/episodes
This week we interview Suzi Conklin, chef and cooking instructor, about what's going on in your mixing bowl when you make pancakes. We also go in depth about the Impossible Burger, the latest craze in food, and one of the best hopes from the food industry of quelling climate change. Join us for a trip to Hood River's own Twin Peaks Drive-in to taste what all the non-meat burger fuss is about.
A special happy birthday to two of our Patrons; Murray Sampson and Sandy Beichler!
We hope you have the happiest of birthdays.
We are so grateful that you are both a part of the STEMPunX family.

SPX15 ISO, aperture, and shutter speed, OH MY!
Friday May 10, 2019
Friday May 10, 2019
Hello, STEMPunX! Thom Harrop is back with tips on how to take better photos with your phone and just what the heck all those setting on the fancy cameras are all about. We also learn a little about a special video format called S-LOG. We'll be using that for our next video episode. This is short, packed with info, and features our camera corespondent. What's not to love?
The short format is first this month because we are already elbows deep in the ingredients for "The Science of Cooking" video coming out on the 20th.
Show Notes:
ISO: A setting to determine how sensitive the camera is to light. A higher number makes it more sensitive but can produce noise artifacts.
Shutter Speed: Interprets motion in the frame. Slow shutter speed allows the motion to blur.
Aperture: Determines what is in focus in front of and behind your subject. A lower number blurs things around your subject and a high number gets more of the image in focus.
Slog2 and Slog3: Contrast curves that allow a wide range of data to be captured, but require adjustments to the image in post production.
Phone photography tips:
Stabilize your phone
Use a selfie stick, preferably with a small tripod attached AND Bluetooth.
Add a good lens that clips to your phone, for wide and macro shots especially. Don't go to cheap though. Aprox. cost $40 per set.

SPX7 Calendars around the globe.
Thursday Jan 10, 2019
Thursday Jan 10, 2019
Joe talks with his longtime friend, maker of metal art, studier of calendars, and awakened soul, Eric Lindsey. The old friends chat about the origins of calendars and whether keeping a tight schedule is a positive thing. Joe and STEMBoT discuss the many forms of calendars currently in use today, and the origins of the names of the months and the days of the week.
We live in a world of hustle and bustle. While understanding calendars is good historical science, the behavioral science piece is to evaluate the use of the calendar as a tool. If we're not careful the tool can become our master.

Time Perception
https://www.brainpickings.org/2013/07/15/time-warped-claudia-hammond/
Planning fallacy
first proposed by Daniel Kahneman and Amos Tversky in 1979, is a phenomenon in which predictions about how much time will be needed to complete a future task display an optimism bias and underestimate the time needed.
This phenomenon occurs regardless of the individual's knowledge that past tasks of a similar nature have taken longer to complete than generally planned. The bias only affects predictions about one's own tasks; when outside observers predict task completion times, they show a pessimistic bias, overestimating the time needed. The planning fallacy requires that predictions of current tasks' completion times are more optimistic than the beliefs about past completion times for similar projects and that predictions of the current tasks' completion times are more optimistic than the actual time needed to complete the tasks. In 2003, Lovallo and Kahneman proposed an expanded definition as the tendency to underestimate the time, costs, and risks of future actions and at the same time overestimate the benefits of the same actions. According to this definition, the planning fallacy results in not only time overruns, but also cost overruns and benefit shortfalls.
Joe and STEMBoT paid homage to Abbot and Costello and their “Who’s on First” routine.

Joe discusses the condition of our oceans and what is being done to clean them up. Plastics are making their way into our ecosystem and we legitimately have a severe problem on our hands. Beck, our STEMPunX intern, shares her views as a teenager concerned about her future and what will be left of the planet by the time she has a family.
Many links in the show notes to a LOT of information about plastics, alternatives, how the cycle starts and what we can do to make a change. Our planet needs us.

Nociception: In nociception, intense chemical (e.g., chili powder in the eyes), mechanical (e.g., cutting, crushing), or thermal (heat and cold) stimulation of sensory nerve cells called nociceptors produces a signal that travels along a chain of nerve fibers via the spinal cord to the brain
